Details
MALTBY SANDBECK PARK SK59SE SK57619031 4/67 Ice-House in Folds Wood II Ice-house. Late C18 or early C19. For the Sandbeck Estate. Ashlar limestone dressings to brick-lined vault. Rock-strewn earth mound with doorway in north-west side flanked by rubble retaining walls (collapsed at time of resurvey). Doorway has rebated round-headed surround with remains of curved band over. Interior: brick-lined tunnel with recesses on left and right, another doorway to inner tunnel with step and ledge below hatch openings into subterranean vault. Estate papers for 1807/8 (Beastall, p116) refer to the completion of an ice house for the 6th Earl which could mean this structure or another ice-house the remains of which survive at the east end of Upper Lake.
