Details
MALTBY STONE SK58NE 8/73 Stone Mill GV II House with attached water-powered mill building. C17 origin enlarged mid C18 and C19. Coursed rubble magnesian limestone, pantile roof. 2-storey, 3-bay house with 2-storey, 3-bay mill under lower roof on left; adjoining 2-storey wings to rear of each part. House: central doorway with glazed door and overlight in chamfered quoined surround with raised lintel. Flanking C20 casement windows in altered quoins. 1st floor: square-faced surround to single-light window over door and to linking 2-light flat-faced mullioned windows; inserted casement to left of central window. Shaped kneelers, renewed gable copings, end stacks with offset plinths and bands. Mill building: wide doorway on right has ashlar surround flanked on left by small window with square-faced surround and on right by casement; lst-floor door over. Straight joint indicates end bay on left over former wheel pit is later; it has external steps with landing over archway into wheel pit and segmentally-arched doorway over. Rear: altered 2-storey wing to house adjoined on right by wing to mill probably of C17 but heightened, its right return is ashlar-faced indicating position of former water wheel; water course later altered to flow beneath end of mill. Interior: raised platform for 2 sets of stone in left end of building. Main shaft of another wheel in rear wing. Rear wall of mill building encases a timber wall post thus indicating a long history of will development on this site.
