Details
ASTON-CUM-AUGHTON WORKSOP ROAD 5K48NE (south side), Aston 6/20 Entrance gateway and attached railings at The Lodge GV II Gateway with attached railings. Mid C19. For the Aston Hall estate. Ashlar sandstone piers, cast- and wrought-iron railings. Large double gate with side gates and railings extending for approximately 9 metres to each side. Piers: square and each with plinth, sunken-panelled shaft egg-and-dart enriched cornice and surmounted by tripod torchere. Gates: each has central roundel of Greek fret ornament around central rose, side panels with anthemion motifs, top rail with cast spear-head finials. Axe-head finial to meeting stile of double gate; its lock with impressed mark "WALKER / WALMGATE / YORK", Railings to left set in curve an plinth wall have spear-head finials and plain ashlar end pier; similar straight length of railings on right with end pier. Forms main entrance to Aston Hall (now known as Aughton Court q.v.).
