Burngate Farm House
II
Farm house. Possibly C16 origin, much altered. Walls part stone, part brick, part
plastered. Tiled roofs, brick stacks. Part two-storeys, part two storey and
attics. Plan consists of two separate wings at right angles enclosing the end of
the main barn (q.v.) and with a linking porch in the internal angle. North wing,
appears earlier - may have originated as a farm building, attached to main barn.
South (courtyard) elevation has, on ground floor, an arched door opening now part
blocked to take a window. One stone mullioned window with lead lights on ground
floor, and two on first floor - made up from re-used material. North elevation has,
on ground floor, door opening part blocked to take a window. Two stone mullioned
windows on ground floor, made up of re-used material. Also large blocked door
opening adjoining barn. One gabled half-dormer with casements. Deep chamfered
ceiling beam on ground floor - possibly re-set. South wing may be of early origin,
but largely remodelled in C19. Porch has brick and stone walls - incorporating some
large re-used worked stones, and tiled roof. Arched doorway with part-glazed door.
Above this a horizontally sliding sash window with glazing bars. Ground floor of
main wing has casement window with glazing bars and "Gothic" head. First floor has
one horizontally sliding sash window with glazing bars. Attic has one dormer
with horizontally sliding sashes with glazing bars.
Projecting block west of this wing - probably a later addition, has twin gables to
road (west). South elevation has, on ground floor, two casement windows with
glazing bars and "Gothic" heads. First floor has one horizontally sliding sash
window and one casement, both with glazing bars. West elevation has casement
windows on ground and first floors. North wing has single-storey outbuilding on
east, with brick and stone walls and tiled roof. Ledged door and casement window.
Beyond this a further outbuilding now converted to a cottage, with brick walls,
tiled roof, and brick stack. Modern door and windows.
RCHM Monument 4.
