Details
1. 5193 PAMPHILL ABBOTT STREET (North Side) Church of St Stephen ST 90 SE 3/36 2.11.82 II 2. Built 1907. Architect C E Ponting. Arts and Crafts design church. Stone walls, tiled roofs with stone copings to gables. Stone slate roof to porch. Nave, chancel, west tower; south transept, south porch vestry north of chancel. Tower has battlemented parapet with carved gargoyles. Belfry has 2-light gothic windows with perpendicular tracery. Buttress at east end of south face of tower has canopied niche with statue. South porch has gothic arch with leaf carving in mouldings. North and south walls of nave have square-headed windows with perpendicular tracery. South transept has 4-light gothic window with geometrical tracery. Single-light traceried window in south wall of chancel. 5-light gothic window with curvilinear tracery in east wall. Good oak roofs to nave, chancel and transept, of out-braced collar-beam form, with windbracing. Stained glass in east windows and south transept window, heraldic glass in west window. All fittings appear contemporary with church. Pulpit, lecturn, stalls, pews in oak, family pew under tower. Alabaster font with square bowl on circular stem, supporting angels at corners. Good example of Arts and Crafts design.
