Details
PAINSWICK NEW STREET SO 8609 (part) (south east side) 9/210 John Cook monument in the churchyard c.14 m north of St Peter's Chapel to the Church of St Mary GV II Chest tomb. Late C17 or early C18, but inscription to John Cook, Clerk of this Parish, 1830. Limestone. Thick top to plain chamfer edge, wide lyre ends, to the east with cartouche and to west an angel with open book; north panel with bold bolection mould and supporters, south has drapes and a poorly carved cherub head. Some lettering, including 1830 inscription, but this is certainly a much earlier monument, probably C17. Set to cyma base. A good example of the lyre chest tomb of early date.
