CARHAM WEST LEARMOUTH NT 83 NW 8/15 Planned farmbuildings to north of Farmhouse GV II

Planned farm buildings. Early C19. Random rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, Lakeland and Welsh slate roofs. Symmetrical E-plan group forming 2 yards.

Right-hand yard has ranges of single-storey, 6-bay cartsheds with segmental arches left and right, continuing towards rear of yard as stables for working horses. Large 2-storey shelter sheds and granary to rear now obscured by C20 shed in front. 4th side of yard has square gatepiers with pyramidal caps and flanking walls c.8ft high; to left the forge. In centre of yard a small 2-storey turnip house with segmental arch on ground floor and clock above.

Left-hand yard has similar gatepiers and wall on south side with former bothy attached to forge. Range to left is stables for riding horses. To right the rear of the cartsheds. Most of the rear range has been replaced by a C20 shed. In centre of yard a turnip house with dovecote above. Gabled roofs with flat copings and stone ridge pieces. Forge and bothy have small square brick chimneys. Stables have 2 louvred ventilators with pyramidal roofs. VR wall letter box in gable of cartshed to right.

C20 sheds not of special interest.
