RENDCOMB A 435 SP 00 NW (east side) 6/246 South Lodge and gateway forming the southern entrance 4.6.52 to Rendcomb College

GV II

Lodge to Rendcomb College (q.v.). Built c1866 by P.C. Hardwick for Sir F.H. Goldsmid. Italianate style. Ashlar and random squared and dressed limestone; red tile roof. 'L'-shaped plan with a tower on the east side and a covered entrance porch in the angle on the west side adjoining the gateway. Single-storey and basement (where the land slopes away to the east). Two-storey tower (with basement). Entrance front: canted bay with rusticated plinth projects forwards right; horizontal rustication above the plinth, three segmental-headed 6-pane casements with moulded keystones which double as an eaves brackets; paired moulded stone eaves brackets either side of the keystone/brackets. C19 door with 4 sunken panels to the left of the canted bay, under a covered entrance way supported on two square Tuscan columns; decorative wrought iron panels between the columns (see description of gateway). Canted bay matching that on the west projects out to the left of the covered entrance way. Tower with single rectangular windows with long and short work architraves to the ground floor on the north and east; the upper floor is lit on all 4 sides by 2- light windows with octagonal and square leaded panes within round- headed surrounds divided by Tuscan columns linked to Tuscan pilasters by a moulded cornice; tympanum above each light; single recessed circle in the space above the two windows. Modillion cornice and finial with wrought iron decoration at the apex of the roof. The tower is evidently intended to reflect that of Rendcomb College (q.v.). Hipped roofing with finials. Projecting lateral stacks with moulded cappings. Gateway comprises a series of ashlar piers linked by decorative wrought iron panels. Piers c2.5m in height with moulded plinths and cappings. Double gateway with decorative wrought iron gates flanked by two matching single gateways.
