Details
MELBURY BUBB ST 50 NE MELBURY BUBB VILLAGE 2/79 The Manor House 11.7.51 and attached garden walls GV II* Manor House. Early C17, with roof construction at north end of front range of C16 or earlier construction. Coursed rubble-stone walls with dressed stone quoins. Slate roofs, with stone gable-copings throughout. C19 and C20 rebuilt brick stacks on gable-ends, front (west) gable, and on rear wing gables. Main range and two rear wings, small U-plan. 1 1/2 and 2 storeys, to west front. Central front gable, serving lateral Hall fireplace. 1 1/2 storey gabled porch with ball-finial, with small single storey room, gabled, and ball-finial to south. 6 windows in total to ground floor, hollow-chamfered stone mullions with separate labels throughout, of 3, one, 2, one, one, 3 lights (north to south). C20 metal casements with lead lights throughout c.1960. First floor windows of 3 and 4 lights. Front door, in north side of porch, moulded door-frame with depressed-arch head, C17. Plank door with strap hinges and studded. East side, the Hall has a six-light (3 x 3) stone mullion window. The rear wings are of 2 storeys with stone mullion windows and C20 metal casements. Rear doorway, has stone moulded jambs and depressed-arch head. Interior: original plan (north to south), kitchen, through-passage, Hall, Parlour, with one rear range for services, and one for probably sleeping accommodation. Flagstone floors. Hall (central room): plank-and-muntin partitions throughout, muntins with beaded angles and flat face, C17. Open fireplace on front wall, with moulded wood jambs on stone bases and corresponding moulded bressumer over, C17 with renewed jamb posts. Deep straight-chamfered ceiling-beams, plastered with moulded cornices, painted. Parlour (inner room) has plank-and-muntin partitioning, C17 fireplace with moulded stone jambs and depressed-arch head, with C20 blocking in stone for smaller hearth. Two staircases, N.E. wing, with heavy turned balusters and newels, C17. S. end of front range, with plank-and-muntin casing, renewed treads. Roof-construction, north end of main range has 2 trusses of jointed-cruck construction, with the remains of arch-bracing surviving. Late medieval or C16. 2 sets of through-purlins. Post to create doorway on landing, a C20 insertion. C17 plank-and-muntin partitioning upstairs. Attached Garden Walls to east of the house, 7 metres (north, 28 metres, 23 metres, 28 metres (return to S.E. wing). Coursed rubble- stone walls with ashlar stone copings, C17. (RCHM.
