BRINKBURN BUTTERKNOWES NZ 09 NE 9/83 Farmbuilding range attached to east of Butterknowes Farmhouse GV II
Farmbuildings, early C19. Roughly-squared stone with tooled-and-margined dressings; Welsh slate roofs. Plan: 2-storey cartshed/granary has projecting L-shaped stable wing and continuing L-plan barn with gingang to rear. Cartshed/granary shows 3-bay segmental arcade with 4 part-slatted windows above; stable has boarded double doors under segmental arch, and boarded door; hipped roof. Right return of stable shows boarded door, flanked by boarded windows, all in chamfered surrounds. Lower barn to right has stable door and part-slatted window; projecting gabled right part shows boarded door on inner return. Rear elevation: Cartshed/granary shows 2 boarded doors, left in chamfered alternating-block surround, with 4 slatted windows above; barn has boarded door in similar surround on right of circular gingang with 5 rectangular piers, each with chamfered plinth and set-back; conical roof.
Interior of gingang: Larger east and west piers carry heavy tie-beam. Roof structure has central post with raking struts to 2 levels of curved purlins.
Covered yard south of cartshed/granary, asbestos-roofed outbuilding to north, and altered hemmels south of barn are not of special interest.
