FELTON B 6345 NU 1800 (East side) 8/4/87 Felton Former Gas Works 12/101 buildings at Gas Works Farm II
Gas Works, mid-C19. Squared stone with cut dressings and brick buttress; Welsh slate roof. Rectangular retort house with outbuilding range to south. East elevation: Retort house single storey, 2 bays. Central round-arched doorway; semicircular window to right with iron-framed radial glazing, stone surround and slightly-projecting sill; stable door with 4-pane overlight to left; broad raking buttress at left end. Coped gables; broad square stack, projecting from left return, now terminates a little above roof ridge since brick upper part removed. To left is lower 4-bay outbuilding; former arcade of round arches altered, except for blocked arch at right end; coped left end gable.
Rear elevation (to road): Retort house shows 2 iron-framed semicircular windows with cemented-over roundel between.
Interior: Retort house has roof structure entirely composed of iron rods, to reduce fire risk.
Rare example of small rural gasworks. The outbuilding range, in poor condition at time of survey, is included for group value.
