Details
SEATON DELAVAL A 190 NZ 3276 (North side) The Avenue 13/69 Lookout Farmhouse with attached outbuilding to west GV II House, C17 heightened and remodelled in mid-C18, rear wing heightened in late C19. Front squared stone with tooled dressings, returns and outbuildings rubble, rear wing partly snecked stone; blue slate roof. L plan. 2 storeys, 3 bays, symmetrical. Central flush-panelled door with 2-pane overlight in C19 raised stone surround with pilasters and cornice. 12-pane sash windows, the lower in inserted stone surrounds. Stepped and banded end stacks. Returns show stepped gables which have pedimented raised centre-piece showing blind lunette above band. Right return shows 2 small attic windows below band; to right is rear wing with one ground-floor 12-pane sash set in double-chamfered surround of C17 mullioned window.
Outbuilding to left of house shows coped left gable; boarded door and double doors, under timber lintels, at rear.
The stepped pedimented gables (c.f. also The Delaval Arms, Hartley) show the influence of Vanbrugh's style at Seaton Delaval Hall.
