Details
SUDELEY CHARLTON ABBOTTS SP 02 SW 8/154 Manor House (formerly listed as part of Manor 4.7.60 House with Barn and outbuildings) GV II Manor house. Possibly late C16, early C17, enlarged Cl9, C20. Ashlar front, coursed, squared stone; stone slate roof. Six- window garden front, one room deep, 3 storeys, with rear wing to left, 2-window, 2-storey extension on left to garden. Garden front: floors in right third lower than rest. Two-light mullioned window set in plinth on right: double-boarded door, double-ovolo surround, Tudor arch , plain spandrels. To left plinth higher, three, 3-light mullion and transom windows, linked hoodmould over. Above, two 3-light mullion and transom windows, 2 transoms,ovolo moulding, moulded string as hoodmould. String steps up to left and becomes simpler against 3-light mullion and transom window: 3 similar but slightly shallower windows to left, string course as hoodmould, stopped to left of last window. Above, two 3-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds on right, large, plain parapet gable over with ridge chimney, 3 flues, conjoined moulded head. To left 2 parapet gables, each with 3-light mullion and transom window with hoodmould; apex finial. Parapet gables at ends; ridge chimney left end. On left 2-storey extension, single and 3-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds, plain coping, flat roof. Right return rectangular bay, 3-light mullioned window at foot, above 5- light ovolo-moulded mullion and transom window, 2 transoms and king mullions, string course, repeated to second floor, with moulded cornice, parapet gable and finial behind. Interior: to left of garden door panelled room, small-size dust- ledge panelling, Jacobean overmantel. To rear, ceiling divided into 9 with 3 moulded beams each way, exposed, chamfered joists. Double ovolo moulded surround to door to right from stairs, semi- circular head. Stairs solid treads in short flights round large, stone pier: top landing by stairs to roof void with turned balusters to handrail, later boxed in. Top floor, room on right plaster barrel vault, moulded plaster plaques over windows to rear: tinted glass in windows to bay and lobby; stone fireplace surround (e.C17) with moulded shelf. Right-hand third of original house may be a little later than remainder on left; by mid C17 a 6- window front with eccentrically-placed rear wing, enlarged to rear on left C19, in front 1930's. First floor windows on right, and lower part of stairs renewed after fire, mid C20, to match earlier work. Forms group with-barn (q.v.). (D. Verey, Gloucestershire, The Cotswolds, 1970)
