SP 01 NE SHIPTON HAMPEN

6/97 Barn c5m east of Hampen Manor GV II

Detached barn. Early-mid C18. Limestone rubble, squared and dressed quoins, corrugated-iron and stone slate roof with stone ridge tiles. 'T' shaped plan with a projecting porch on west side, lean-to left of porch. C20 lean-to rear left not of special interest. High flat-chamfered plinth. Gabled porch on west side with loft over, access to loft via stone steps up to plank door on right-hand side of porch. Double doors to projecting porch, similar smaller doorway opposite. Plank door in right gable end, pitching door to loft also. Roof hipped at right-hand end. Interior: 4 bays, original roof trusses with collar and tie beams and double butt purlins. Barn forms a picturesque unit on corner adjacent to farmhouse (q.v.).
