Shop and house. 1889 by Boolds and Hardy of Morpeth for Mr. Matteson. Rock- faced stone with Welsh slate roof. Art and Craft Tudor style. L-plan with shop front towards Oldgate and large house to rear.

Shop: 2 storeys plus attics. Ground floor has original shop front with half- glazed door to left and large 4-light mullioned shop window to right. Shop sign above with stone relief: lettering and stone cornice supported by dated stone brackets with small grotesque figures. On 1st floor two 3-light mullioned windows in chamfered surrounds. Steeply-pitched gabled roof with flat coping and tall corniced end stacks on rear pitch. 4-light raking dormer. On right return small consciously-irregular windows,

House. 2 storeys, 3 bays with slightly projecting, cross-gabled centre bay. To the right a half-glazed door with long, low 4-light mullioned window to right of it. Above, directly below eaves, a low 12-light window with wood baluster mullions; this continues round the corner and along the right return. Other ground-floor windows are 3-light mullioned-and-transomed. 1st floor has 2- and 3-light mullioned windows. Gabled roof with tall corniced end and lateral stacks.
