25/37 Otterburn Mill
GV II
Woollen mill. C18, extended 1821 and c.1930. Roughly-dressed stone with ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof.
In 3 sections:-
Centre section of 1821 3 storeys, 6 bays. Mainly 16-pane sashes on ground and 1st floors, though four have been renewed with 6-pane sashes. Shorter 9-pane sashes above. In lower left-hand corner two segmental arches over the mill race which passes through the building.
Lower 2-storey section to right is older in its masonry but has early C20 openings. It was extended to right c.1930.
Single-storey section to left includes the dye house and the drying room.
Interior: Water wheels were replaced late C19 by a turbine which survives. Also much early C19 gearing, and a waulk hammer or fulling hammer. Beneath the floor of the dye house 2 brick furnaces. The drying house has a perforated iron floor and, below the roof, rows of racks. Cloth was hung from the racks and heat percolated up through the floor from the furnaces.
