SANDHOE BEAUFRONT NY 96 NE 5/296 South Lodge and attached quadrant walls

GV II

Gate lodge and quadrant walls, c.1870 by J.A. Hansom. Tooled-and-margined ashlar with smooth ashlar dressings; roof not visible. Wood and iron gates. Perpendicular Gothic style. South elevation in 3 parts, with chamfered plinth and moulded string below embattled parapets. Centre tower holds double-chamfered 4-centred-arched doorway in square frame with traceried panels in spandrels and heraldic stops to hoodmould; canted oriel above. Stacks with octagonal shafts rising from parapet on each return; to rear right taller octagonal stair turret. Single-storey flanking bays, that to right with canted bay window and to left with 3-light window. All windows have diamond-latticed casements.

2-bay gate passage has groin vault with chamfered ribs springing from foliage- carved corbels, and pointed doorway on each side. C19 openwork gates with stop- chamfered stiles and rails, and iron dogbars with fleur-de-lys heads.

Quadrant walls each 13 bays with upper part set back between gabled piers; gabled coping.
