4/71 Farm Buildings and Boundary Wall at Hardwick Grange

G.V. II

Farm buildings. Late C19. Brick and timber with slate roofs and ashlar dressings. Coped gables with kneelers. 5 ridge stacks. Single and 2 storeys. West range, 22 unequal bays, with 4 east wings, 13 unequal bays, forming 3 courts. Cartsheds, carriage house, office, workshops. Windows are mostly mullioned and transomed casements. East front has 4 gables. Cartshed gables, to left, have small door and that to right, diaper work. Left and central courts have various irregular openings, altered C20. Carriage house in third gable from left, has to south, 3 fixed lights, gable with pointed arched double doorway with keystone and ornate hinges, and above, pinnacle. Right court has to south, 7 fixed lights and 2 double doors, to west, 6 open bays, and to north 3 facades. Central office building, 2 storeys, 4 bays, L-plan, has off centre canted bay window with parapet and 3 casements flanked to left by 3 casements and to right by pointed arched door. Above, 2 flat roofed dormers with 2 light casements. Workshop to left has double doorway flanked by single casements and beyond, to left, doorway; beyond to right, a single casement; some have pointed heads. Above, 2 blind gables. Workshops to right have 3 casements and to right, double door. Above, 4 blind gables. East gable has 2 casements. North side has central projecting gabled bay with 3 casements, flanked by 3 casements. Outside, to east, linking brick boundary wall with ashlar coping. 2 pairs of chamfered timber gateposts with conical octagon caps and 2 pairs of close boarded gates.
