Details
BRILLEY CP RHYDSPENCE SO 24 NW 4/30 Rhydspence Inn 19.8.53 - II House, now public house. C16 with mid-C19 and late C20 alterations. Timber-framed with rendered infill on rubble base with some coursed rubble walling; stone tiled roof laid in diminishing courses with rubble stack at centre and north-east end of ridge. Four framed bays aligned north-east/ south-west with large central chimney and also a porch wing on the north-west side. Two storeys. Framing: mainly two rows of close-set studding per storey. Four rows of square panels from sill to wall-plate in part of south-east elevation with small solid braces in the upper corners. South-west end has a jettied first floor and a renewed chamfered bressummer with pendant ball finials at each end (one renewed). Above is a tie-beam truss with close-set and diagonal struts. Porch wing has two rows of close-set studding at first floor level and the first floor is jettied with a plain bressummer on shaped brackets and with pendant finials at each end. North-west front elevation: windows are mainly C19 casements. There is a 5-light window, a 2-light window and a 2-light C20 casement on the ground floor and a 4-light and a 3- light window on th first floor. The porch wing has inner and outer segmental archways, a first floor 2-light C20 casement and, within, are plank and battened studded double doors. To the left of the porch is a lean-to addition with a catslide roof and a verandah at first floor level. This has a square ground floor window and door and steps at the left side of the proch lead up to the verandah and to an inserted C20 glazed double doorway. To the left of this lean-to is a C20 addition with a 3-light first floor window. There is a further C20 single-storey addition at the north-east end. Interior: stop- chamfered main ceiling beams. Fireplaces have been altered. (RCHM, III, p 25, item 24: BoE, p 86).
