Hartington Hall
II
Hall, now youth hostel. 1611, restored and extended 1862 and 1911. Coursed
limestone rubble with gritstone dressings and quoins. Stone slate roofs. Large
stone stacks to side walls, and to rear ridges. Stone coped gables with moulded
kneelers and ridge ball finials. Two storeys plus attics. H-plan with rear
additions. Three gabled bay front. Four-centred arched doorcase with chamfered,
quoined surround to west of central recessed bay. Studded wooden door. Lintel
inscribed 'HB 1611 TOB 1862'. Large C19 bracketed hood over. To east, 3-light
recessed and cavetto moulded mullion window with dripmould over, continuing over
door. Similar windows, either side, centrally placed in each bay. Above, three
similar 4-light mullion windows. Single light recessed and ovolo moulded window
over door. In gable over, 4-light recessed and cavetto moulded mullion window
with dripmould over. Similar 3-light windows either side. All fenestration C20
leaded lights. To either side of central bay, two square section lead gutters
with elaborate hopperheads, that to the east inscribed: '1711 HB'. Classical
figures decorate pipe junctions. Side elevation has added bay with canted bay
window dated 1911. Rear elevation, all C19 and C20 in Tudor style. Interior has
several large original stone fireplaces. Some C17 panelling and plasterwork
ceilings to lower rooms.
