BRANCEPETH THE VILLAGE NZ 2237 (South end) 15/41 Entrance screen to 10/5/67 north-east of Castle Lodge (formerly listed as Gate Piers to Brancepeth Castle) GV II Gateway comprising 8 piers, linking walls, gates, railings and overthrow. Mid C19. Ashlar sandstone piers and walls; iron gates, railings and overthrow. Central carriageway flanked by narrower pedestrian entrances. Tall pair of panelled square-plan piers, flanking carriageway,have chamfered caps and crowning carved stone urns. Similar lower pairs of piers, flanking both pedestrian entrances, are crowned by vases with gadrooning. Similar end piers. 4 dwarf walls, linking the piers between the 3 entrances and the end piers, have plinths and projecting chamfered copings. Central 2-leaf gate has rising curved middle and top rails and closely-spaced uprights with spear-headed finials above small X-scrolls, increasing in height towards centre. Similar railings in pedestrian entrances and on the dwarf walls. Simple curved overthrow with central spherical glass lamp.
