Moat walls, 2 bridges across moat, garden wall and gate piers. Drained moat surrounds 50- x 70-metre rectangular enclosure with farmhouse (q.v.) at south corner. 1. Moat walls. Late medieval squared rubble walls with C19 brick inner faces. Walls on inner side of moat, though parts of south-east section of moat retain walls on both sides. South-west section is very fragmentary, other 3 sides are well preserved. 2.5 to 5.0-metre high walls with tall chamfered plinth and large squared quoins. Stone, concrete and terracotta copings. 2. Two bridges across moat to south of farmhouse. Probably C17. Ashlar voussoirs, dressed stone and rubble walls and brick/rubble parapets. Bridge to north-east, formerly guarded by a gatehouse (now demolished), has been widened. Segmental archway With cut voussoirs is barely visible due to infilling of moat. Rebuilt rubble parapet with stone coping. Narrow bridge to south-west leads to doorway of barn (q.v.) adjoining rear of farmhouse. Ashlar segmental arch with chamfered soffit and stone-coped brick parapets above chamfered stone band. Two partly rebuilt sections of wall, similar to that described above, on outer side of moat between the bridges and also linking the narrower bridge to a detached byre (see Item 6/65). 3. Garden wall and pair of gate piers. Late C18. Tall squared stone wall with flat coping runs north-west dividing the enclosure into 2 unequal parts. Short section at right-angles has pair of tall square-plan piers with fragmentary corniced caps. The moat walls and bridges are a rare, important survival. The garden wall and piers are included for group value. Low Butterby was an important medieval manor owned by the Lumley and Chaytor families. The gatehouse, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, was demolished in 1966.
