7/15 Pair of lodges at south entrance to Pencarrow

GV II

Pair of lodges at south entrance to drive of Pencarrow (qv). Circa 1840s. Snecked ashlar slatestone on stone rubble plinth. Each lodge has an sctangonal canted slate roof with central granite stack. Plan: Both lodges are of overall octangonal plan, divided into 2 rooms heated by a central fireplace. The left hand lodge on the south-west has a kitchen in a cellar, approached externally from the south west and internally by means of a narrow stair. Exterior: Pair of single storey lodges, the south west lodge with a basement. Canted sides and a slate roof with deep eaves continued out and supported by timber posts, forming a verandah. The window openings have been altered and have circa mid C20 2-light casements. The 2 entrance doors, in shallow projecting mid C19 porches with shouldered arches, have the original diagonally braced plank doors. A C20 extension has been added on to north side of the south west porch. The granite stack to the north east lodge has a moulded cornice supported on corbelled brackets, whilst the stack to the south west lodge has partly disintegrated. Interior: C20 chimney-piece in south west lodge.
