-
II
Quay on Porthnavas Creek. Probably an early to mid C19 enlargement of an earlier C19
or late C18 quay. Built of massive granite ashlar. The earlier quay is exposed on
the north east side and is built of pitched slate construction with granite ashlar
quoins and copings. The earlier part has slightly battered walls and the later
granite ashlar extension, which is most of the quay, has vertical walls.
Almost square-on-plan narrowing slightly at the outer side projecting into the creek.
At the top on the outer side there is a circular manhole that drops down to an
opening at a lower level on the outer side of the quay. This is presumably for
loading, unloading ships or embarking or disembarking at low tide. The top entrance
of the manhole is rebated for a hatch cover.
