CAMBORNE NEWTON ROAD SW 63 NE (west side) 8/69 Troon Winding engine house on site of Grenville United Mine GV II
Winding engine house (or "whim") to former tin mine, now derelict. Probably late C19. Slobbered killas rubble with granite quoins, bob wall of granite blocks, window arches and upper stage of chimney of polychrome brick. Rectangular plan on east-west axis, with bob wall to east, foundations of former winding drum in front of this, and circular chimney attached at south-west corner. Smaller building than the associated pump engine house, with round-headed openings including driver's window in bob wall (wall beneath this collapsed) and small cylinder door in rear wall. Vertical tie-plateat west corner of north side. Intact tapered cylindrical 2- stage chimney with a cornice. Foundations of winding drum partly dilapidated. Functional partner to pump engine house approx. 50 metres to the north-east (q.v.), forming an interesting group on a conspicuous site close to the road. One of a series of mines exploiting the Great Flat Lode.
