REDCAR KIRKLEATHAM NZ 52 SE 4/53 Turner Mausoleum, adjoining Church of 23.6.52 St. Cuthbert G.V. I
Mausoleum 1739/40 by James Gibbs; restored and internal cladding added, 1839. Sandstone ashlar; coursed rubble plinth. Lead on cornice and step-backs of roof. Octagonal plan; south and south-west sides adjoin Church of St. Cuthbert (q.v.). Baroque. Single tall storey with basement burial chamber. Entered from church. Deep plinth. Diagonal buttresses, capped with inverted volutes;with pilaster strips above. Keyed round-headed niches alternate with similar recesses. Vermiculate rusticated surrounds and bands below renewed continuous band inscribed: "THIS MAUSOLEUM WAS ERECTED 1740 TO THE MEMORY OF MARWOOD WILLIAM TURNER ESQUIRE THE BEST OF SONS". Circular windows with radial glazing bars and architraves, below modillion cornice. Pyramidal roof, with panelled faces, rises from concave drum on 2 steps. Richly-carved flaming urn finial. INTERIOR: Circular plan. Walls and domed ceiling rendered and scored to represent ashlar, 1839. Original stucco waterleaf rosette in dome and moulded cornice with fleuron ornament. 8 niches, alternately large and small. Large south-east niche holds boarded door c.1839, others contain monuments. North-east niche: 1740/42 by Peter Scheemakers: standing lifesize figure of Marwood W. Turner, leaning on slender pedestal, surrounded by books, on a pedestal with epitaph tablets. South-east niche: 1761 by Sir Henry Cheere: standing figure of Cholmley Turner in Roman costume, leaning on urn, on enriched pedestal with epitaph tablet. North-east niche: 1810 by Richard Westmacott to Sir Charles Turner: standing lifesize female figure in Greek dress, by a sarcophagus on pedestal with epitaph. In 2 of the small niches a sarcophagus and draped urn, mid C19, with epitaph tablets. In middle of floor, marble and slate chest tomb of Sir William Turner d. 1692. Concave, gadrooning, cyma recta bands and epitaph panels on sides; sculptured arms on ends. On floor : nine floor slabs with epitaphs and a C14 grave cover. Octagonal burial chamber, reached by stair in sanctuary of church, now sealed: umbrella vault with boss inscribed "1739". 5 stone benches support coffins.
