WITTON GILBERT CHURCH LANE NZ 24 NW (South end) 1/52 (inset) Clark tomb circa 15 metres south of west end of church of St. Michael GV II
Headstone. Circa 1777 to Stephen Clark. Sandstone slab c.one metre high with shaped top. Long inscription to Clark, schoolmaster and clerk of the parish for 52 years, died May 30th, 1777, aged 71. 'Reader be admonished by this Stone / to imitate the example of the deceased / who as a Man felt for every distress / & to the utmost of his power relieved it / as a Neighbour cheerfully performed / every friendly office to all who solicited / him - as a Christian he lived in Faith / & died in hope / Some friends in testimony of their / esteem of so useful a character / have erected this Monument.' Included for historical interest.
