GV II EGLOSKERRY SX 28 NE 8/47 Potters Cottage and The Downings -

GV II

House now divided into 2 houses. Probably C17. Stone rubble and cob, rendered and painted above ground floor. Rag slate roof with gable ends and lower range to left with gable ends. Stone rubble axial stack with granite quoins. Shaft removed from front lateral stack. Plan: Original plan uncertain. The house has been divided into two and was restored in the mid C20. The house is built down the slope with the ground rising to right and probably had a 3-room and through passage plan, the right hand house now comprising the hall, heated by an axial stack backing onto the passage and unheated inner room. There is a C17 1-room plan wing on the front of the lower side of the hall, the original purpose of this wing uncertain. The left hand house is probably the lower end, originally heated by a front lateral stack, and passage, the partition on the lower side removed. There is a circa C19 outshut extension across the front of the lower end. Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 1:2 window front with ground rising to right. Higher roof above hall and inner room and 2-storey gabled projection near centre. Circa C19 single storey outshut extension across front left with C20 window and C20 door. C20 2-light casements on ground and first floor of gabled central wing. To right C20 3-light casement lighting hall with C20 door and C20 3-light casement to right and two C20 casements on first floor. Interior: Right hand house has closely set large roughly chamfered floor joists in the hall and projection to front of the hall. The timber fireplace lintel is chamfered. The roof structure was not accessible. Potters Cottage has roughly cut slighter floor joists and the fireplace has been covered over.
