1/201 Clowance Barton Farmhouse - GV II
Farmhouse. Circa late C19, extended late C19. Coursed dressed granite and dressed killas brought to course, dressed granite quoins, chamfered jambstones and lintels. Gabled dry Delabole slate roofs with gable, axial and lateral chimneys. Projecting eaves and verges with shaped wooden barge boards. Crested red clay ridge tiles. Single depth plan: originally shallow E-shaped plus service wing at right angles behind the right hand side. The E-shaped 3 room front has shallow gable-ended bays at either side and in the middle a single storey porch projecting farther. Behind the porch is presumably an axial passage; the room behind this passage is heated by a rear lateral stack. Probably slightly later a 1 room plan extension was made to the service wing at right angles to the rear right hand side. Circa late C19 another service wing was added behind the left hand room plus a stair in the angle and the front of the house was extended by 2 bays (entrance hall and living room) in similar style with the left hand bay with gabled projection at the front. This addition was probably to provide self-contained separate accommodation. There is a circa late C19 single storey range of outbuildings adjoining at the rear of the original service wing. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 1:1:1 bay original front, right, and 1:1 bay addition in similar style, left. The original front has a single storey gable-ended porch and at either side is a shallow gabled-ended 2-storey projection. The porch has a central doorway with double partly glazed doors and the tall windows over breaks the eaves and has a stone gable. Except for this narrower window over the door, with single 4- pane horned sash, all the windows are in wide openings with circa late C19 paired 4- pane horned sashes. The addition, left, has 2-storey gable-ended projection far left, and gable-ended porch, right, remodelled in the C20. The masonry of the original part is coursed and the masonry of the addition is brought to course. All the gables, both front, rear and ends, have projecting verges with shaped wooden barge boards. The other elevations are rubble with granite dressings and retain their circa late C19 horned sashes. Interior not inspected. This principal farmhouse on the Clowance estate is attractive on all elevations and virtually unaltered since circa the late C19.
