House and a former coachman's cottage with coach house. Circa early C19. Coursed dressed granite front with granite sills, lintels and archstones. Scantle slate roofs with brick chimneys over the gable ends of the house and 1 axial brick chimney towards the right hand side of the cottage.
Plan: a double depth house, left, and a shallower depth cottage with a coach house doorway with room over on either side on the right. The house has 2 equal front rooms flanking a central passage probably leading to a central stair between 2 rear service rooms. The cottage has one ground floor room with originally a cross passage on the left of the room (now part of the room) and a wide carriage doorway at either side. The stone walling over the right hand doorway has been removed circa early C20 to insert a larger window. The street slopes down to the left.
2 storeys. Overall 6 window street front. Symmetrical 3 window front of house left and slightly irregular 3 window cottage right. The house has a wide central doorway with a panelled door and panelled reveals; the windows are 12-pane horned sashes. The cottage has 2 wide elliptically arch-headed carriage doorways with monolith archstones meeting a keystone, left and right, ledged doors, each doorway with a wide door, left, and narrower (wicket) door, right. Between the doorways are 2 windows, the left hand window originally the cottage doorway.
First floor windows over the carriage doorways and over the original ground floor window. All with original 12-pane hornless sashes except for the 1st floor right hand window which is a tripartite horned sash in an enlarged opening. The house on the right is much later date and replaces the original end wall of the cottage (it is possible that the cottage was originally 2 cottages each with a carriage entrance and that the building extended further to the right).
Interior not inspected.
This is a good example of domestic/carriage/stabling accommodation in a village.
