Institute. Datestone 1883. For Theophilus Code, presented to the town 1890 by his widow and daughters as a memorial to him. Rockfaced granite brought to course and granite dressings. Dry Delabole slate roof with brick chimney over gable end, left, and 2 gabled ventilator dormers. Cast-iron ogee gutters. Plan: slightly irregular 2 room plan; narrow room left, and wide room right with entrance hall between with stair hall behind, projecting slightly to front and rear. Gothic style. Exterior : 2 storeys. 1:1:2 bay north front plus splayed bay returning the corner, right. Plinth, corbelled impost blocks, mid-floor flush ashlar band, first floor sill string and coped gabled with-moulded kneelers. Each bay has 2-light mullioned windows with plate glass sashes, steep 4-centred arched lights to the front bays and square-headed lights to the right-hand splayed return bay. Slightly projecting entrance bay (second from left) has steep 4-centred arch with hoodmould over pilaster jambs. Pair of 3 panel doors with tympanum overlight. The return bay, far right, has first floor oriel carried on 3 moulded corbels; over the window is steep 2- centred moulded arch carried on square engaged columns and the tympanum of the arch has a coat of arms. Interior not inspected.
