SW 83 SW MYLOR LITTLE FLUSHING, Flushing

6/218 Little Flushing Quays

GV II

Quays. Circa C17-C18. Mostly vertically-set shale rubble but at most south
projection with short sections of granite ashlar, with some still surmounted by
loading bays with steps, also granite ashlar to corners and granite steps.
Irregular plan of small docking bay with straight flight of steps along north-west side and adjoining larger bay with rounded-on-plan walling at north and
east and long tapered quay on seaward side to south. Further retaining walling (partly fallen at time of survey, 1985) continues to north west of steps.
These quays are part of a group of C18 quays along the waterfront at Flushing
and not only notable for their successful use of vertical dry stone walling, a constructional method thought to be first imported from the Netherlands in the C17; but for their importance historically in the success of the town, both by defending it from the sea, and providing good tidal mooring facilities.
