Details
DAVENHAM C.P. HARTFORD ROAD SJ 67 SE 2/33 Davenham Church of England Primary School - G.V. II School, and former schoolmaster's house. Dated 1856 on datestone which commemorates the founding of the school with funds given by the Revd.Thomas France. Red Flemish bond brick with blue brick diapering and ashlar dressings with green slate roof and lead roof to bellcote. Single and two storeys. Western front: Two storeyed, being originally the schoolmaster's house. Projecting plinth with chamfered top common to whole building. Projecting gabled wing to left of centre with projecting bay window to ground floor with three lancet lights set in ashlar surround. Hipped roof above set with lead flashings. Two-light first floor window above with ashlar surround and relieving arch which has alternating blue and red brick voussoirs and diapering to the tympanum. Ashlar kneelers and coping to gable. To left of this is a doorway with C20 lean-to porch and to left of that a three-light mullioned and transomed window with chamfered ashlar surround and cusped lights. Three-light first floor window with chamfered mullions and ashlar surround. To right of the gabled wing is a doorway with a C19 lean-to porch. Over it is a 2-light ½ dormer window with ashlar surround and blue and red brick voussoirs and a 1/2-hipped roof. Bands of diapering at levels of springing of ground floor windows and sills of first floor windows both of which are common to the whole building. Massive 4-flue chimney stack to ridge over projecting wing with 2-flue stacks to left hand gable end and to ridge at right. Right hand reveal: gabled portion at left of two storeys with 3-light ground floor window with chamfered ashlar surround. Similar two-light window to first floor with relieving arch of alternating blue and red brick voussoirs and diapering to tympanum. Stone kneelers and coping stones to gable. To right and flush with this is a gabled single-storey portion containing a doorway at left with a C20 lean-to porch on brackets probably replacing a C19 original. Four-light tall window to centre with ashlar surround, cusped lights and quatrefoil to apex with relieving arch above with brick voussoirs and decorated tympanum as before and ashlar hood-mould with label stops. Ashlar coping and kneelers and bellcote to apex supported by buttress pieces at sides of ashlar with off-sets and a semi-octagonal pillar resting on an angel corbel at the front. Octagonal spire above with wrought iron weather vane. To right is a recessed portion with glazed porch and brick and ashlar lower wall and glass and timber upper portion (a C20 replacement). Three-light half-hipped dormer window above. To right again is a projecting gabled wing with a 4-light tall window similar to that at left and with ashlar kneelers and coping and diapered pattern to gable apex. Later lean-to porch door at right of this and single storey extension to right of orange brick with outshut at ground floor level and 3-light hipped dormer window at first floor level. East front: datestone to apex of right hand gable.
