6/111 Entrance screen at Empacombe
(formerly listed as The Great
23.1.68 Gatehouse entrance to the walled
gardens of Mount Edgcumbe Park)

GV II

Entrance screen to kitchen garden of great house. Early C19 but apparently using
reset C16 or C17 features. Random slate and sandstone rubble with limestone, brick
and granite dressings. Screen wall of a sham fortification character. Entrance
flanked by towers flanked by broad buttressed walls. The cart doors are square-
headed with a hollow moulded granite surround. Above are 3 pointed arched blind
recessed panels. The towers are divided into 4 storeys by limestone bands, the
second and third storeys have the same recessed panels, the top storey has square
sunk panels. The flanking wall to the left has a foot arch with roll-moulded
surround. The wall top has a feature of blind recessed panels to give the
impression of battlements. The whole forms an impressive entrance feature to what
was the kitchen and fruit gardens of Mount Edgcumbe.
