Details
WINSFORD FORMER U.D. DELAMERE STREET SJ 66 NW 4/95 Monument c. 20 yards to North of Church of St. John the Evangelist - GV II Monument to those who died in the fire at Over Cotton mill. 1874. Yellow sandstone ashlar. Square plinth with chamfered edge. Moulded base above this also with chamfered edge. Slightly tapering square body above with octagonal top which has gables and a cross to the centre, East face bears inscription which heads:
THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE HERE INSCRIBED AND WHO LOST THEIR LIVES BY THE FIRE WHICH OCCURRED AT THE OVER COTTON MILL ON THE TWENTY-SEVENTH DAY OF OCTOBER IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FOUR "AND WHAT I SAY UNTO YOU I SAY UNTO ALL. WATCH." St Mark 13.37.
On either return are inscribed four names of those who died, the oldest being thirty-four years, the youngest three months.
