ST STEPHENS BY DUTSON SX 38 NW LAUNCESTON 9/146 Lower Dutson Farmhouse - II

Farmhouse. Circa early C17. Rendered stone rubble and cob. Asbestos slate roof to lower range on left with hipped end. Rag slate roof to higher range on right with hipped end and hipped end to shallow projection to right of centre. Stone rubble axial stacks with moulded caps. Plan: The house has been considerably remodelled in the C20 and the original arrangement is uncertain. As existing the house comprises a single depth 4-room plan with the ground sloping down to the left and with a lobby entrance to left of centre. It is possible that the original entrance was just below the existing entrance into a through passage. The lower end would have been on left unheated and the hall to right heated by an axial stack backing onto the passage and the shallow projection to the front on the higher side being either a hall bay or was a stair turret. The inner room on the higher right hand side heated by an axial stack in the cross wall on the higher side of the hall and the room beyond a possible extension. Alternatively the entrance may have been above the existing one with the lower end heated by an axial stack backing onto the lower end of the hall and the hall heated by an axial stack in the higher cross wall. A third possibility is that the shallow projection on the front was a 2-storey porch, the hall being on the higher right hand side and the lower room to left with the range below being further service wing. Exterior: 2 storeys. Long asymmetrical 5 window front with C20 PVC windows. Entrance to left of centre with heavy plank door. Lower range to left has 3 PVC windows of varying size on the ground floor and 3 PVC windows above. To right of entrance C20 window and hipped 2-storey projection beyond with PVC windows on ground and first floors, blocked entrance in left hand side and small timber framed Medieval or just post Medieval one-light window with pointed head and chamfered frame. There is a similar window below which has been blocked up. Beyond the projection to the right is a blind window, a plank door and inserted C20 window to right. Interior: Ceiling beams replaced in C20 and fireplaces altered. Roof structure was not inspected; the owners state that it was replaced in the C20.
