9/162 Heavitree House

GV II

House. Circa 1750, with C19 alterations to windows. Rubble, rendered and lined out,
slate roof with gable end stack to right in brick.
Central entrance plan, with room to right and left of passage, with stair in room to
left backing on to passage; rear right service wing of one-room plan, with entrance
to service wing from internal courtyard at cellar level to right side.
2 storeys and cellar, 2 bays to front to Heavitree Road, ground and first floor left
and right 4-pane sash, with central 4-panelled and glazed door with pilasters, steps
up to door with C19 railings. At 2nd floor, 2 small 2-light casements, modillion
cornice. Right side has gable end extended to right over rear service wing; there
was probably originally a courtyard at this side, enclosed with door and inner
entrance to cellar to left. Ground, first and 2nd floor to left have 4-pane sashes,
ground and first floor right 4-pane sash.
Interior: This house retains exceptionally fine C18 internal features. The central
entrance hall at ground floor has a moulded plaster cornice. The room to right has a
3-tier plaster cornice with cable moulding, roundel and triglyph moulding and
acanthus moulding; the fireplace to rear of room has reeded pilasters and
dentillation moulded mantel, cupboards right and left with pointed arched doors with
Gothic glazing; dado panelling. Both front rooms have 6-panelled doors. Room to
left has eared architrave and moulded mantel to fireplace, dado-panelling; stair
boxed in to rear is a winder, with fielded panelling to sides. At first floor 2-
panelled doors; front left room has fireplace with dentilled mantel; front right room
has fireplace with Greek key fretwork below moulded mantel, panelled cupboard and
moulded plaster cornice. Fielded panelling continued to stairway to 2nd floor, 2nd
floor rooms have 2-panelled doors. In the rear service room at ground floor, there
is a stone fireplace with moulded mantel and cupboards to sides with panelling and H
hinges, drawers below. This house is typical of the high standard of interior to be
found in Kingsand, particularly the plasterwork in the front right room with free
interpretation of classical ornamentation.
