GV II

Small house. Circa late C18, but may be remodelling of older house. Painted rubble to ground floor and cob above, slate sills and wooden lintels. Steep asbestos slate roof, formerly thatched, with brick chimneys over gable ends. Plan of 2 rooms flanking passage leading to central stair, later outshut behind right-hand room, workshop or barn adjoining on right, which is possibly earlier than house or separated by party wall at C18 remodelling. In this part are opposing doorways, adjacent to party wall, for putative through passage; with broad ledge as if this wall has always been inside. Further evidence of joint at return of party wall. Right-hand gable end built into bank. 2 storeys with first floor rooms partly in roof space. Nearly symmetrical 2-window roughly west front with 2-storey 1-window barn adjoining at right. House has nearly central doorway with C20 door. Rood on brackets over. Original C18 12-pane 2-light casements except for 4-pane sash to ground floor right. Barn, right, has small window opening to ground floor middle and to first floor left of middle. Interior is simple but little altered: original T-stair and beamed ceilings. First floor not inspected but said by occupier to have old roof structure. There are very few C18 vernacular houses in this area to have escaped drastic C20 alterations. This one is still almost complete.
