5/11 The Old House -

GV II

House, incorporating former outbuildings. C17 or earlier origins with later C17 wing, mid C19 roof, C19 former outbuildings and c1960 alterations, including new windows throughout. Roughly-coursed ironstone rubble with brick dressings; wing has brick gable and front in English Bond. Timber lintels, brick stacks and additions, pantile roofs. Main 3-cell range with baffle entry lies gable-end on to High Street with projecting wing to left containing stairs and outer room, forming an L-shape around a courtyard, with former outbuildings extending beyond the angle. 2 storeys, 2 windows. Plinth, quoins to right. 2-panel door to left of centre. Casements, 1 under a segmental brick arch, all other openings under timber lintels. Stepped eaves. Wing to left has moulded plinth on rubble base, a bricked-up entrance to tile right. Casement windows, under rubbed brick flat arches to ground floor. Roof hipped to right over main range, with central axial stack. Wing has end stack and steeply-pitched gable preserving earlier higher roofUne. Rear to Stather Hill: 2 storeys with 2 low storey and single storey former outbuildings to right, irregular fenestration. Main range has 2 C19 canted bays to left with 2 casements to right and 3 above under lintels. Former outbuildings set forward, with 2 casements, breathers and a blocked first floor opening under nipped and gabled roofs. Interior of main range and wing has plain chamfered and ovolo- moulded beams, chamfered brick-arched fireplaces and a re-set C17 balustrade with turned balusters and carved string.
