House. c1790 with probably earlier origins and with later additions and alterations. By John Carr for Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd Baronet. Pinkish- brown brick in English garden wall bond and magnesian limestone,with ashlar dressings and Welsh slate and ashphalt roof. Gothick style. Recessed 2-storey, single centre bay between 3-storey, single-bay octagonal towers with 2-storey, single-bay wings and with ranges to rear. Plinth with moulded ashlar copings. Central entrance. Tall pointed arch with cavetto- moulded hood with label stops. To sides of arch are round-headed niches. Within, a double board door with ashlar lintel and Gothick overlight with decorative glazing under pointed arch with cavetto-moulded hood. Modillion ashlar cornice. Battlements. Turrets, alike: to sides of ground floor are 2-traceried-light windows within pointed surrounds under cavetto-moulded hoods. First floor, centres have 3-rounded-light, straight-headed windows in double-chamfered surrounds under cavetto-moulded hoods with label stops. Ashlar band. To second floor sides have similar windows to ground floor. Cavetto-moulded cornice. Battlements. Outer bays, alike: ground floors with 2-traceried-light, pointed-headed windows under cavetto-moulded hoods. First floor has single round lights. Cavetto-moulded cornice. Battlements. Interior. Some original fireplaces. 6-fielded-panel doors. Built as an eye-catcher to Sledmere House (qv). Pevsner N, Yorkshire: York and The East Riding, 1978, p 346.
