1/24 Carriage House and Flats Nos 1 and 2 in Stable-yard, 150 metres north west of Normanby Hall -

Carriage house and dwellings. 1820, by Sir Robert Smirke for Sir Robert Sheffield. Brick front and stacks with sides and rear of coursed ironstone rubble with brick dressings; later rendering, slate roof. Classical Revival style. Rectangular in plan; forms north side of stable-yard. 1 and 2 stories, 7 bays; symmetrical. Central 2 storey 5 bay section with single storey end bays. Bays 2, 4 and 6 break forward. Plinth and 2 bands link bays, the lower band interrupted by openings. Central pedimented bay contains a recessed rectangular carriage entrance flanked by lamps on brackets, with double doors beneath a rectangular overlight with glazing bars. Flanking bays each have 2 carriage entrances with plank doors. Bays 2 and 6 have plank doors and casements in segmental-arched recesses with a round-headed recess above, between bands. End bays have a large casement in a segmental-headed recess with a rectangular recess above. First floor has central circular window with radiating glazing bars flanked by 2 casements with stone cills under low segmental arches. All casements have glazing bars. Hipped roofs. End stacks to central block.
