GV II
Watermill. Circa mid C19. Killas and granite rubble, dressed granite quoins,
jambstones and lintels, slate sills, hipped, almost pyramidal grouted scantle slate
roof with brick chimney, over the left hand side (serving Anvower Mill House qv.).
Plan: rectangular nearly square plan with C20 single storey store added at the front.
Built into the bank at the rear to allow walk-in access to the upper (second) floor
from the road behind. The large overshot waterwheel survives beside the right hand
wall, adjoins slightly older miller's house qv., left.
3 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3 window south-east front, the lower part of the front
blocked by a C20 extension. The left hand windows are grouped closer to the left,
presumably due to building against and over the older mill house qv., left. 2
original 16-pane 2-light casement to first floor left and right, original louvres to
the second floor right hand opening, otherwise C20 windows in the original openings.
The right hand wall has 1 opening to the first floor. The wheel has wooden spokes
and buckets and cast iron wheel segments bolted together. At the rear is central
slightly arched loading doorway to the second floor with a ledged door.
Interior : said to be very complete with original floors, machinery and roof
structure.
This mill is just below Lowertown Mill qv. and had the advantage of having second
floor loading from ground level, allowing a 1-man operation rather than 2 men.
