ST MABYN SW 07 SW 4/101 Haywood Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Circa late C16, possibly with earlier origins. Stone rubble and cob. Rag slate roof with half hipped ends. Several probably early crested ridge tiles. Brick axial stack to right of centre, brick end stack on left and brick end stack near front on right. Plan: Original plan uncertain and the roof structure, although not fully accessible appears to be of C18 construction. The existing plan is of 3 room and cross passage arrangement with the entrance to left of centre; the room to left heated by an end stack, the hall to right of the passage heated by an axial stack on the higher end of the hall and the room to right possibly originally unheated, with the later end stack on the front corner of the room. There is a blocked entrance to right of centre with a rear door opposite and it is possible that this was the original entrance with the lower end to right, probably unheated and the hall to left heated by an axial stack backing onto the passage. The only thick cross wall in the house is that containing the flue of the hall stack. The blocked door in the back of the hall stack described by the owners is of an uncertain purpose. The opening in the rear wall on the `probable higher side of the hall may have originally been to a stair turret, the first floor opening corresponding with a large cupboard. The putative stair turret has however, been replaced with a small C19 outshut. Circa early C19 outshuts added to rear of hall and right hand room End dairy to front of left hand room. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with entrance to left of centre, blocked entrance to right of centre and with several straight joints towards right hand side. C19 lean-to outshut at front left with stone rubble porch and C20 door adjoining to right. 2-light casement lighting hall, 2-light casement in blocked door opening and 1-light casement to right. First floor with 2-light casement with circa C18 or early C19 leaded glass above hall window and C20 2-light casement to right. Pigeon holes in left hand side elevation and C19 outshuts to rear. Interior: Right hand room has a C20 fireplace and the window in the right hand side wall was originally a cold store. The hall fireplace has been rebuilt in the C20. The ceiling beams comprise 2 heavy chamfered crossbeams, the stops buried and almost complete chamfered secondary beams with run-out stops. The mortices in the cross beam nearest the fireplace indicate some alterations. Framed C20 stair. First floor; circa late C17 panelled door reused for cupboard in rear wall with raised and fielded panels and rounded headed top. The roof structure above the hall appears to have been replaced in the C18, only the crude slightly chamfered feet of the principals visible, with a secondary roof structure possibly of the C19.
