Details
WERRINGTON SX 38 NW 9/270 Higher Sutton Town Farmhouse - II
Farmhouse. Circa late C17 with C18 and C19 extensions. Rendered and painted stone rubble and cob. Thatched roof with hipped ends, the thatch continued down over an outshut extension on the left hand end. Rag slate roof to single storey lean-to outshut across rear. Brick shaft to axial stack on left and stone rubble end stack on right. Plan: Three room and cross or through passage plan with ground sloping down gently on right. Entrance near centre with circa C20 framed stair inserted in passage. Larger hall-kitchen on higher left hand side of passage, heated by end stack. Small unheated room on lower right hand side of passage, probably originally a dairy with small, possibly parlour beyond to right, heated by end stack. This arrangement appears to be original and there are stone rubble cross walls up to first floor level, on the higher left hand side of the passage and between the unheated room and parlour to right. Circa C18 or C19 single storey service outshut added across rear and circa C19 lean-to extension added on left hand end. Exterior: Two storeys. Regular 1:3 window front with C20 windows in slightly widened openings. C19 part glazed door with Cl9 or C20 porch near centre, flanked by two C20 windows. Three C20 windows on first floor. Circa C19 extension on left with C20 windows on ground and first floor. The thatched roof has been continued down over the left hand end to about 1 metre above ground level. Interior: Heavy unmoulded closely set floor joists in hall-kitchen. Other ceilings plastered. Fireplaces blocked by later grates. Only hall-kitchen and passage inspected at time of survey (1987).
