Details
SNAITH AND COWICK BEASTFAIR SE 6422 (north side) 12/44 Nos 31 and 33 (formerly listed 23.4.52 separately) 14.2.67 12/44 II Almshouses. BT on datestone. Restorations of 1985-86 included partial 1627 rebuilding to rear and internal alterations. Brown brick in English bond. Pantile and Yorkshire slate roof. Double-depth plan, with 2-room front (formerly with central lobby entry) and rear outshut incorporating 2 gabled wings. Former wing to rear right now separate house in Butle Lane (qv). 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Panelled door to left (No 31) flanked by 24-pane sliding sashes beneath rubbed-brick flat arches. Blocked central door. C19 former shop front to right (No 33), has panelled door in architrave and panelled reveal with tripartite sash with glazing bars to right beneath cornice and hood. 2-course brick first-floor band, pair of circular tie-bar ends, painted datestone to centre. First floor: 24-pane sliding sashes, blocked central window. All windows and doors are C20 replacements. Modillioned brick eaves cornice. Swept roof with single projecting eaves course of slates. C20 restored brick-coped gable to right, with tumbled-in brick to rear. Axial and end stacks. Right return, facing Butle Lane, has blocked ground-floor window, first-floor band, 12-pane first-floor sash and blocked opening in gable. Interior. Chamfered spine beams and exposed joists to front rooms; No 33 has re-set and altered mid- Cl8 single-flight staircase with column-on-vase balusters with square knops, and ornate late C18 - early C19 carved pine chimney-piece to ground floor, re-set from first floor. Almshouses became solicitor's office in 1841. Photographs in NMR.
