Garden terrace retaining walls, steps and pergola in garden of Heyle ( Nak Centre)
qv. Circa 1914-19. The architect is not known, however the original architect's
drawings are said to be in the possession of the owner. The house and garden were
built for Mr and Miss Cooper (brother and sister). Shale rubble walls with slate
capping, slate treads to the steps and granite pergola posts.
The garden terraces are situated to the west of the house at the left end of the
main range. The top terrace has a large rectangular lawn below which there is a
path with a pergola of roughly hewn granite monolith posts on the outer side and
slate piers on the inner side. The granite outer posts are set on a retaining wall
which drops down to a narrow terrace below which is a grass path; at the east end
of the path there is a flight steps, with integral curved seats either side, giving
accesss to the terrace around the house; at the other (west) end of the path a pair
of squat circular piers to a flight of steps which link all the terraces. At the
bottom of the steps at the lowest terrace level the flanking walls are scrolled out
as squat terminal piers with granite bosses on their tops. On the west (left) side
of the lower terrace a tall boundary wall encloses a small rectangular pond or well.
The terraces in front of the house are earth banks without revetments.
