Details

NEWTON ST CYRES SMALL BROOK SX 89 NE 5/26 Reeds Farmhouse - - II House, formerly farmhouse. Late C16, possibly earlier, partly rebuilt in C20. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone and brick chimney stacks; C20 slate roof (formerly thatch). Traditional 3-room and through passage plan but lower end and passage (north-east end) completely rebuilt. 2-storeys throughout. On south-east front, 3 windows on each floor left of massive projecting lateral stack to hall, built of volcanic, stone. Mostly Cl9 and C20 casements but some are earlier. 2 chamfered mullions have been removed from C12 window close to hall stack on first floor. Other early wooden windows survive in gable end (left of stack on ground floor) and north-west side (centre first floor window). Hall has large C16 fireplace of volcanic stone with oak lintel and deep chamfered cross beams with step stops. Inner room with probably C18 brick fireplace and plain-chamfered elm ceiling beam. Early roof timbers said to survive.
