SKIRPENBECK MAIN STREET SE 75 NW (north side) 1/46 Church of Saint Mary 26.1.67 GV II*
Church. C12 nave and chancel, C18 west tower, C19 south porch and north vestry. Brick to west tower, coursed rubble with freestone dressings, slate roof. West tower, 3-bay nave with south porch, 2-bay chancel with north vestry. West tower has low stepped brick plinths, round-headed louvred belfry openings with sills, stepped brick eaves cornice and pyramidal roof. Nave: two 2-light pointed windows with C19 curvilinear tracery. Small blocked window to extreme east. Round-headed south door of 2 orders - the outer roll moulded with nook-shafts: the capital to the west shaft is decorated with volutes and saltire crosses. The springers to the inner order are carved with a latticed pattern. The north nave wall has a narrow round-headed slit window with sloping sides to west, a broader opening under a segmental arch to east, and a pointed door with a continuous broad chamfer. Chancel: 2 lancets flanking a 4-centred door under a square hoodmould: the spandrels are decorated with triangles. Square headed 3-light east window with Perpendicular tracery under a hoodmould. Interior: whitewashed. Plain round-headed chancel arch with chamfered imposts. C12 tub font with intersecting arcades. Memorial to Richard Paget and his 2 children (1636): a theatrical presentation of the busts of himself, his wife, and their children (that to the right notably fat) flanked by curtains. Beneath is a tablet bearing an extraordinary rhyming inscription, full of puns and word-play, with grieving putti to right and to left.
