PRESTON MAGDALEN LANE TA 22 NW (north side, off) 4/16 Dovecotes/stables adjoining screen wall and gateway on south side of foldyard approximately 40 metres north-east of Magdalen House
GV II Dovecotes/stables, adjoining screen wall and gateway. 1815 for Thomas Wilson. Red-brown brick. Pantile roofs to dovecotes. Plan: single-room dovecotes linked by screen wall with central gateway; forms south side of foldyard. 2-storey, single-bay dovecotes, that to right with step to ground-floor board door with 4-pane overlight beneath segmental arch, flanked by breather slits (that to left blocked), first-floor board door beneath segmental arch, pyramidal roof. That to left similar, with C20 sliding garage door to original ground-floor entrance, and first-floor stable door with wrought-iron strap hinges. Stone-coped wall ramped down to gateway with C20 pier to left, double board gates with strap hinges to main entrance, segmental-headed pedestrian entrance to right with board door. Left and right returns have segmental-headed first-floor openings with raised brick surrounds, that to right blocked, that to left with board hatch containing 5 rows of round-arched dove-holes with shelves. Ranges adjoining to rear are not of special interest. Included for group value.
