Details

NEWTON ST CYRES THE VILLAGE SX 89 NE 5/35 Nos. 4, 5 and 6 (formerly listed - as Post Office) 26.8.65 GV II House, sub-divided and enlarged to make 3 cottages and shop. Much altered building of the late C17 - early C17 origins. Plastered cob on rubble footings, C19 and C20 brick rebuilds. Volcanic stone, brick and cob stacks. Thatched roof, 2-storey L- shaped building. 2-room deep main block along street with attic rooms in roofspace. Roof of lower rear block to left (no.4) is carried to front gable. 4 window front. Each house has 1-room to street; No.4 is entered from left side, Nos. 5 and 6 through double doors in centre of main block. Latter have relatively symmetrical 3-window front with outer tri-partite sashes with glazing bars (bowed shop window of circa 1960 to No.6). Above doors 12-pane sash and dormer, a 4-light casement comprising flat-arched centre with side-lights preserving lattice-pattern leaded lights. Gable of No.4 has smaller tri-partite sash over 8-pane sash. Right-hand side wall completely rebuilt in brick circa 1960 with 2 stacks and half- hipped gable. No.5 has axial stone stack and No.6 has large (possibly cob) kitchen stack on side. Interior much modernised, but may contain hidden early features. Possibly derived from 3-room and through passage plan.
